What changes the price of a custom website?

Displace marketing websites start from $12,000. That is a starting point for a defined project, not a price for any website. The final scope depends on the design, content, editing needs and systems the site must connect.

A better first question than ‘How many pages?’ is ‘What must this website help people do?’ A portfolio, a resource library and a platform with accounts may look similar in a sitemap. They involve very different work.

The parts that change the budget

  • Page types. Twenty projects using one layout can be simpler than five pages with different structures and interactions.
  • Content. Writing, photography, translation and moving existing material need owners and time. A finished identity and approved copy make a different brief from a brand starting fresh.
  • Editing. Updating a headline, publishing a story and building a new page are different permissions and workflows. Decide which your team needs.
  • Integrations. A contact form is a different scope from accounts, member areas or data shared between several business systems.
  • Migration. Replacing a live site can include moving content, preserving useful URLs and checking the important paths before launch.
  • Review and delivery. Who approves the work, when content arrives and what must launch together affect the plan.

Compare the work, not just the totals

Imagine a design studio with ready-to-use photography, approved copy and one reusable project layout. Now imagine the same studio also needs two languages, a searchable archive and a client login. These are hypothetical briefs, but the difference is concrete: the second includes more content decisions, software and testing.

When comparing proposals, check whether both include the same page types, content work, integrations, editing controls and launch checks. A lower total may simply describe a smaller job.

When discovery comes first

Custom platforms and web apps start from $28,000, with paid discovery required. Discovery and architecture start from $6,000. That work defines requirements, structure and wireframes so the build can be priced against a written scope.

A website can also need discovery when the important decisions are unresolved. Agree what discovery will deliver, how it relates to the build and how it is priced before starting. Do not assume its fee is included in another starting price.

Budget for the website after launch

Hosting, domains, paid tools and ongoing work need a place in the budget. Which costs apply depends on the stack and the project agreement. Ask which subscriptions your company will hold and which charges are separate from the build.

Displace ongoing care starts from $2,250 per month, with scope agreed separately. New functionality, maintenance and regular content work should have clear boundaries so there is no ambiguity about what the plan covers.

A useful brief names the audience, the action the site must support, the content you have, the systems it connects, who will edit it and the budget you can commit.

Make the next conversation specific

Send your current site, the problem you want to solve and your target timing. We can identify what belongs in the first release and what needs definition before a price is useful.
